The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements in KwaZulu-Natal Siboniso Duma has expressed his condolences and ordered a comprehensive investigation into the crash that occurred last night on the N3 at Van Reenen Pass.
The incident involved a truck, a taxi, and a car, resulting in the tragic deaths of 18 people, while one baby suffered serious injuries.
Reports indicate that the truck driver fled the scene after the accident.
KZN Transport Department spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya says, “MEC Siboniso Duma has expressed his deepest condolences to the families. Last week on the 31st of December he had a meeting with the mayor of eThekwini, he also had a meeting with other mayors, including chief traffic offices, in various district municipalities, just to look at losses of the festive season.
“Reflecting on a safety plan. That meeting was also initiated by MEC Siboniso Duma purely because we had just experienced another accident involving two taxis, one taxi that rolled over resulting in the death of eight people. Now eight people, and then 18 people, it’s quite sad,” adds Sibiya.
